Education as a Measure of Success
In Kenya, success is perceived as levels of education, economic stability, leadership, community influence, social standing and material comforts. However, perceptions vary from person to person, highlighting the diverse perspectives within a community.
Recently, we had a conversation with Kendi Muthomi, a dedicated GLOW mentor since the pre-Covid era. Kendi is currently a Ph.D scholar in Entomology and Nematology at the University of Florida. In the course of our conversation, shed light on what success is perceived to be in many local communities citing herself as reference.
For instance, her level of education. According to Kendi, her educational milestones stand as a beacon of inspiration, elevating her to a position of admiration and respect within her community. Parents point to her as a role model, emphasizing to their children the value of perseverance and determination, irrespective of one's background. The impact goes beyond personal achievement; it becomes a symbol of possibilities for the younger generation.
Her multiple levels of education and diverse experiences have opened doors and afforded her a unique privilege—the ability to traverse between careers smoothly. This freedom to navigate professional paths, a luxury often constrained by limited education, highlights the transformative potential of higher education.

Beyond Kendi's personal narrative, education plays a pivotal role in breaking the chains of financial constraints that often limit access to quality education. In many Kenyan communities, financial barriers stand as formidable obstacles, hindering many, especially girls and women, from pursuing certain fields of study. As girls and women are enabled access to quality education, the barriers crumble, equipping them to pursue diverse careers hence breaking gender norms and contributing meaningfully economically.
Leadership, in its truest form, involves making informed decisions that positively impact communities. Education provides individuals with the knowledge and analytical skills necessary to understand complex issues, devise solutions and make decisions. Kendi's ability to navigate different academic disciplines showcases the versatility and informed decision-making abilities that education instills. As a mentor, her educational background is a guiding light for those aspiring to leadership positions. Mentorship fueled by education creates a culture where leadership is not just about personal achievements but also about uplifting others.
Education indeed has the power to shape a society’s perceptions and expectations. When embraced, it is a catalyst for change. An educated individual champions causes, challenges norms and initiates conversations that lead to action and eventually, positive transformations. The knowledge gained helps in identifying and addressing pressing issues within communities, cultivating awareness and activism.
The aspirations of GLOW girls extend far beyond earning a diploma or bachelor's degree. With women and mentors who have worked up the ladder by their side to guide and show them the way, the impact certainly goes beyond individual lives touched to families, communities, the country...the world.
