Shamsia’s Story

Shamsia is a GLOW graduate and now working with the National Drought Management Authority under the Hunger Safety Net Program. She graduated in December 2019, with first-class honors and significant experience from her internship at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Until GLOW, she did everything she could to support her education but it was never enough for college. After her father died, her mother sold the only possession they had which was a tiny plot of land in efforts to pay for her school. The amount earned didn’t even cover one semester of college expenses. Shamsia tried to raise funds through government funding and her community but had nothing left when her dad died and no other options until GLOW.

Shamsia would not be able to finish college without her GLOW scholarship. Her struggles have given her first-hand experience of what many girls face in Kenya stating, “the few who are able to attend school end up dropping out due to poverty, early marriages, early pregnancies, and lack of empowerment”. GLOW has helped transform her life, increasing her passion to lead others into success with dreams to sponsor GLOW girls in the future, give back to her community, and empower girls.
